Have you ever wondered what types of vehicles are street-legal in your state or in neighboring states? Or maybe you’re wondering how your state’s vehicle laws stack up against the other states?
In the infographic below, we’ve gathered data on the state laws that define what you’re legally allowed to ride on the road. However, in doing this research, we found that the laws can be very complex even at a state level, with changeable restrictions depending on which municipality you’re in, the type of road you’re driving on, the type of vehicle, and even specs about the vehicle itself, such as maximum rpm.
In the info below, we’ve compiled and streamlined information on what’s street-legal. Some of the results may seem obvious, such as Alaska not having vehicle noise limits. However, some results may surprise you, like North Dakota permitting fewer vehicle types.
To be clear, laws may change, and you should check with local authorities to make sure you are following the rules for your vehicle in your location.

Simply copy and paste the code below and you can share this infographic on your site:
To assess what’s street-legal in each state, we considered ATVs, mopeds, scooters, and other alternative vehicles such as snowmobiles, golf carts, motorized bicycles, custom cars, golf carts, and more. Then we ranked each state by the types of vehicles that are permitted on the roads. Here are the results:
Tier 1: Fewer Vehicle Types Permitted
Tier 2: Some Vehicle Types Permitted
Tier 3: More Vehicle Types Permitted
Tier 4: Even More Vehicle Types Permitted
It’s not just vehicle types that are regulated; noise limits play a large part in what’s allowed on the streets. For classification purposes, noise limits are typically defined by decibel maximums or vehicle modification limits.
Notably, many state laws used language about “reasonable noise limits” or vehicles that are “not excessively loud.” The subjective nature of these specifications means that it’s prudent to be smart about your vehicles volume. For example, don’t crank your vehicle as loud as it can go at 3 AM (when your neighbors are sleeping, and likely to be unhappy if woken!).
Again we caution you to check with the local authorities before taking to the road. Laws may change, and there may be variable noise limits on local roads, for your specific vehicle, or at the speeds you intend to drive at. Here are the state by state results:
Least Severe Sound Limits
Muffler Required: Limits on modifications such as cutoffs or bypasses
Sound Limits: High Decibel
For an example of a high decibel sound limit: in New Hampshire, all motorcycles must be under 92 db when idling, and there is a max of 100 db for 3 and 4 cylinder motorcycles at 5,000 rpm.
Sound Limits: Moderate or Wide Range
Sound Limits: Low Decibel
For an example of a low decibel sound limit: in Ohio, passenger cars can not exceed 70 db when traveling less than 35 mph and 79 decibels when traveling more than 35 mph.
Recently traveling thru Maggie Valley, North Carolina I had the good fortune to visit The Wheels Through Time Museum, where the Founder / Curator Dale Walksler walked me through a portion of the 350 rare Motorcycle – Car Exhibits, with (English) Andy Taking over when Dale had to attend to other needs. Both of them with a vast knowledge of mechanical and history of each item on display. All except about 10 vehicles are operational with Dale occasionally starting one up. There are many vintage one of a kind items and Restoration pieces that will overwhelm you.
The museum is open from April 1 thru November 28.
Hours: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
OPEN: Thursday Thru Monday
CLOSED: Tuesday and Wednesday
As you enter the museum you will be greeted by the friendly hospitality of the staff who are working not only behind the counter but are attending other needs of the museum.
THIS IS A MUST SEE PLACE WITH AMERICANA AT IT’S BEST.

when it rains…they pour
Based on the story by Stephen King “Rainy Season” © (October 1993) Stephen King
Writer & Executive Producer Vanessa Wright seized the opportunity to obtain the non-exclusive rights to Stephen King’s Rainy Season through his Dollar Babies program. In order to bring this dark tale to life, she assembled a creative dream team, consisting of Director Grant McGowan, Director of Photography Mark Simon and Producers Samantha Kolesnik (Turning the Girl) & Stephanie Wyatt.
A young couple arrive in the town of Willow, ME for summer vacation. After repeated warnings from town locals to leave, they stay and learn the horrific price the town must pay for prosperity.
About Rainey Season Red Carpet Benefit
My name is Vanessa Wright and I am the Writer and Executive Producer of Rainy Season, a film adapted from the thrilling short story by Stephen King. We are raising money to produce the film which will be shot in October 2016. We have a terrifically eerie set location and an outstanding cast and crew attached to the film. Now all we need is you! By donating to this non-commercial film, you will helping a very talented group of artists bring to life one of the great stories by the Master of Horror. Per Mr. King’s agreement for the non-exclusive rights to his story, he will be seeing the final product…our film.
We need $30,000 USD to make this film. We have had a very strong start by raising $8,000 so far through indiegogo. We still need to raise the remaining $22,000. The money will be allocated to the following: Location fees, cast, crew, insurance, SFX, VFX, post production, equipment rental, props, permits, incidentals. We are thrilled to be filming in Senoia, GA at the very location where they shot the film Lawless!
Our goal is to take this film around the country to film festivals to showcase our filmmaking skills and talents.
We are proposing that 100% all funds raised ABOVE our goal of $30,000 will be donated to the International Child Art Foundation, www.icaf.org. Our promise is that if you can give to us, we will pay it forward by supporting this globally recognized children’s charity.

ATLANTA, GA – Sixthman, the pioneer in the themed cruise industry has been creating moments that make life rock for bands, brands, and their fans since 2001. As artists and entertainers across several genres place additional emphasis on creating closer and long lasting connections with their fan bases, the concept of setting sail with their most passionate fans on vacation continues to innovate and grow.
Coming off The KISS Kruise V and the second installments of Florida Georgia Line’s “This is How We Cruise” and the Mad Decent Boat Party this past Fall, Sixthman kicked off 2016 by producing TEN festivals in just TWO months. Four of the festivals, The Impractical Jokers Cruise, Walker Stalker Cruise, The Outlaw Country Cruise, and Gronk’s Party Ship were new to the Sixthman roster.Train’s Sail Across The Sun, Joe Bonamassa’s Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea, PARAMORE’s Parahoy, and Kid Rock’s Chillin’ The Most Cruise brought back their highly anticipated headliner events; while the Sixthman curated music festivals, Cayamo and The Rock Boat, celebrated years 9 and 16 respectively. Check out video recaps of some of these events here.
“This cruise season brought exciting milestones. We’re into our 15th year of creating moments that make life rock and only a handful of events away from our 100th sailing and the honor of taking guests on one million days of vacation. This year we expanded into new genres of music as well as into comedy (with The Impractical Jokers Cruise) and television (with Walker Stalker Cruise). As we wrap up another season, it remains clear while the ship, destinations, lights and stages are all part of the excitement…it’s the guests, artists, partners that truly set the stage for memories that last lifetime.”-Anthony Diaz, Sixthman COO
In addition to launching new events this cruise season, Sixthman extended the arms of philanthropy and teamed up with the “Pack For A Purpose” initiative. Guests who sailed on Sail Across the Sun and Kid Rock’s Chillin’ The Most Cruise donated over 1,000 lbs. of much-needed supplies to Jamaican children including books, backpacks, learning materials, first aid, and more that will be distributed to schools in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
So how does a company with less than 50 employees pull all of this off? By striving everyday to live up to our guiding Values (check them out and how we came up with them here). Sixthman goes above and beyond to create moments that change expectations about what work and a vacation can be – A company that truly does LIVE LOUD.
ABOUT SIXTHMAN: Since 2001, Sixthman has pioneered themed cruise experiences for bands, brands, and their fans. We are proud to be celebrating our 15th year and the accomplishment of executing 95 full ship charters, hosting over 207,000 guests for 835,000 days on vacation at sea with world class artists and brand partners such as KISS, Kid Rock, John Mayer, Zac Brown Band, Train, Florida Georgia Line, Paramore, Diplo, Joe Bonamassa, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 311, Alabama, Lyle Lovett, Barenaked Ladies, Sister Hazel, Turner Classic Movies, VH1, along with engaging festivals such as The Rock Boat and Cayamo. Sanford, NC (February 11, 2016) – We have all seen the commercials featuring a cup car on the road out and about the neighborhood, but for most this is a Hollywood dream. Mitchell Engineering is making NASCAR fans dreams become a reality with custom built street legal cup cars.
There are cool cars, then there are COOL CARS! Brian Mitchell defines cool with his Gen 6 Ford Fusion NASCAR Cup Car which by the way will be street legal in North Carolina. This car isn’t your grandma’s grocery getter, that is unless Grandma has the “need for speed” driving around in a candy apple red with a gold metal flake base coat paintjob. This exact replica once raced in the upper echelons of NASCAR. Mitchell and his band of fabricators are not a massive shop but rather a small group creating awesome work for the street.
AN AMERICAN AIRLINES PILOT SPEAKS HIS MIND No name calling, no hatred, no political agenda.
CANADIAN COMMENT APPEARS AT THE END OF THE ARTICLE AND IS MEANINGFUL.THERE IS ALSO SOME RECENTLY ADDED BRITISH COMMENT.
This pilot hit the nail right on the head in his open letter.
A newspaper stated that a Muslim doctor is saying we are profiling him because he has been checked three times while getting on an airplane. The following is a letter from a pilot. This well – spoken man, who is a pilot with American Airlines, says what is in his heart, beautifully.
YOU WORRY ME!
Sent In By Robert Morrison
Written By Captain John Maniscalco, American Airlines Pilot
I’ve been trying to say this since 911, but you worry me. I wish you didn’t. I wish when I walked down the streets of this country that I love, that your color and culture still blended with the beautiful human landscape we enjoy in this country. But you don’t blend in anymore. I notice you, and it worries me. I notice you because I can’t help it anymore. People from your homelands, professing to be Muslims, have been attacking and killing my fellow citizens and our friends for more than 20 years now.
